Improving access to safe drinking water in Kiribati

UN-Water's theme for World Water Day 2010 (22 March) is 'Communicating Water Quality Challenges and Opportunities'. In keeping with this topic, this month we share a story of improved water supply in Kiribati from a member of the Australian Water Association (AWA).

Australian Water Association (AWA) WASH Network member and Water and Sanitation Specialist, Neil Kerby shares his story on designing a reliable water supply for the people of Kiritmati Island, Republic of Kiribati.

Magawhai Fully Operational

‘In the past, these projects often could not go ahead due to the prohibitive costs of installing traditional gravity sewers.  In doing so, more and more councils are selecting the ECO pump solution because of its performance and versatility, as well as its safety oriented pump dry well design.’

Developers are also installing pressure sewer systems for their new subdivisions to significantly reduce capital costs associated with the provision of wastewater services says Mike Peffers.

He adds that the Mangawhai waste water project further reinforces Mono's strong position within the Australasian pressure sewer market.
